2006 Xth Results :
Dear All,
SEVALAYA’S MAHAKAVI BHARATHIYAR HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL DOES IT AGAIN FOR THE FOURTH TIME IN A ROW
Sevalaya’s Mahakavi Bharathiyar Higher Secondary School has secured 100% pass results in the X Std Board Examinations conducted in March 2006 for the fourth consecutive year. R. Yamuna Rani secured the first place scoring 456/500. S. Deepa came second with a total of 439/500 and the third place was secured by R. Devi with a total of 409/500. Deepa and Devi have scored centum in Maths.
The results assume more significance in the light of the background of these students. The first rank holder Yamuna Rani was deserted by her father. Her mother works as a door – to – door sales person. Deepa is from Melappedu village. Her father works as a daily wage labourer in a ready made garments factory. Devi was deserted by her father and her mother works as a construction labouer. Yamuna Rani is in the care of Sevalaya from VI Std and Devi came to Sevalaya when she was in III std.
Sevalaya, a registered Charitable Trust runs a free Home for the poor, orphan and destitute children, at Kasuva village near Thiruninravur (40 Kms west of Chennai) The basic needs of food, clothing and shelter are provided to these children in an atmosphere of love, care and affection. Sevalaya also provides them quality education through its Mahakavi Bharathiyar Higher Secondary School (Tamilnadu Government recognized, unaided).
Apart from the children of the orphanage run by Sevalaya students from poor families in the nearby villages also come to Sevalaya’s Mahakavi Bharathiyar Higher Secondary school. Most of them are first generation school goers. But for the free education provided by Sevalaya many of them would have been drop-outs. Sevalaya provides education absolutely free of cost to all the students coming from nearby villages. The only criteria for admission in to the school is that the student must be interested in studies and must be from families who cannot afford to send them to school, paying fees. Sevalaya also provides 2 sets of uniforms and textbooks, notebooks and stationery to all the students. Free transport is also provided for children of lower classes to commute to school. The day scholars from the village, who appear for the Board exams are provided free accommodation in the hostel from November 2005. The teachers are available 24x7 to help them with their preparation for the Board Exams, clearing their doubts, paying extra attention to students who need more help and motivating them to work hard.
The villages were badly affected due to unprecedented heavy rains last year. Many houses were washed away. But since the students from the village were staying in the hostel at that time, they were safe and were not affected by the dislocation due to floods.
The school provides excellent laboratory facilities to the students, on par with best schools in city. The computer laboratory has more than 30 systems. The students also make use of the free library- Swami Vivekananda Library- which has an impressive collection of 12000 books. Craft education is a part of the curriculum and children are taught various crafts like screen printing, book binding, wirebag making etc.,
Sevalaya has in fact created a silent transformation in Kasuva Village where nearly a decade ago there were no schools and the literacy rate was very low. Child labour was rampant with the children being sent to work in fields and brick kilns for daily wages.
With the support of many philanthropic individuals, corporates, clubs, associations and organizations it is possible for Sevalaya now to run a well equipped school for the poor rural children.
The children have once again proved that given the right atmosphere and proper facilities they can reach greater heights!
Thanks & Regards

Dear All,
Hat Trick by SEVALAYA!
Sevalaya has done it again! For the third year in a row, Sevalaya’s Mahakavi Bharthiyar Higher Secondary School has secured 100% pass results in the recent X Std Board Examinations. V. Gomathi, the daughter of a poor agricultural labourer has se cured the first place in school scoring 420 marks out of 500 (84%). In all 7 students have passed with distinction scoring above 80% and 11 students have scored first class (above 60 %). All this is not possible for Sevalaya without the help and support of you all- our donors and well wishers. All your contributions by way of money, notebooks, textbooks, contribution to the School building Fund. Contributions for infrastructure, spending time with the children etc., have all paid rich dividends today. XIIth Results:
Dear All,
Thanks to all your support, Sevalaya achieves 100% result in 12th standard exams in agriculture group; overall pass percentage is 80%. This is the first plus two batch appearing from Sevalaya's school. All contributions made for the construction of a school building in a remote village, where there was no school 14 years ago, all contributions made for the purchase of uniforms, books, note books and other teaching aids, all the time spent by volunteers in teaching children, all time spent by all of us in training our teachers have given us all a huge return on investment. All these children who have come out with flying colours, are destitute, poor or orphan children. They are from broken homes, lost their parents in early age, abandoned by their own parents and relatives or from very poor families. Many children from the villages are from very poor families having a monthly average income of Rs 600 per family. Such children would not have even dreamt of coming to schools, but for the help rendered by all of you. We have once again proved that if given proper environment, children from such background will come up very well in life. R.Vinodkumar, a poor student from Pakkam village has scored 1028 out of 1200 and has stood first in the school. He is from our computer science stream. His parents are both building construction coolies.
It is a proud moment for all of us. Thanks a lot once again.
Thanks & Regards

Appeal for 2005 - 2006:
Dear All,
Greetings to you from the children, senior citizens, staff and trustees of Sevalaya.
Sevalaya's Mahakavi Bharathiyar Higher Secondary School is proving quality education absolutely free of cost to 700 orphan, destitute and poor rural children. 2 sets of Uniforms, textbooks and note books are also provided to the students free of cost. Most of the students are from broken homes and shattered families and many of them are first generation school goers. Considering the background of the students it is a matter of pride for Sevalaya that the school has secured 100% pass results in the X Std Board examinations successively for 2 years i.e, 2002 - 2003 and 2003 - 2004. As you are well aware, Sevalaya is a charitable institution run purely with the donations by the philanthropic public. The estimate for initial academic expenditure for the 700 students for the year 2005 - 2006 works out to Rs 7,00,000/, at the rate of Rs 1000/ per student. We will be able to meet this huge expenditure only with the help of our donors/well wishers. Hence we appeal to you to contribute generously towards this cause as in the previous years and make quality education accessible to the poor children in a remote village, providing them better opportunities.
Thanks & Regards

Tsunami Relief:
Dear All,
Sevalaya has been contributing its bit, in a very small way, to help the tsunami victims. We have identified two fishermen colonies, one near Ennur, called ‘Erranavur kuppam’ and another village near Kovalam called ‘Kovalam Kuppam’. These two villages had only few cases of loss of life, but 450 families lost all their belongings and are on streets now. As they have also lost their fishing boats and nets, they are unable to go for fishing, the only work they know, and hence are totally dependent on the help they can get from others for their day to day survival. As the number of deaths reported are very low in these villages, it has not got the attention of various agencies involved in relief work. Hence Sevalaya decided to help these 450 families. As they will need another 3 to 4 months, before they can get back to normalcy, Sevalaya has decided to support them till that time, with the help of the donor network we have. Already rice bags have been sent to both the villages. The village elders have received them and doing proper distribution, in the presence of the Sevalaya team. If Sevalaya can get enough funds, we can even think of buying boats and nets for these two villages. Please mention that the donation is for Tsunami aid for donations towards Tsunami relief.
Thanks & Regards

Wish you a very Happy Diwali 2006!!!
:
The festival season is fast approaching. There is a lot of excitement in the air, making plans about what dresses to buy, what sweets to make, a list of family and friends to whom greeting cards/ mails to be sent and may be have a get-together!
Yes, it is Deepavali (Diwali) season! All of us celebrate Deepavali with our family and friends, by wearing new cloths, tasting different types of sweets and firing crackers. We also visit our relatives and friends and exchange gifts.
As donors and friends of Sevalaya (www.sevalaya.org), we are sure that you have included your extended family of Sevalaya also in your Deepavali celebrations. The extended family is made up of 850 poor, destitute village children and 60 poor and destitute grand pas and grand mas.
These children are getting completely free education and doing very well in studies. Sevalaya’s school is the only school in Thiruvallur district to get 100% results in the last four consecutive years. Many our students who completed school education have taken up higher studies and most of them are fully supported by Sevalaya. The grand mas and grand pas are given very good food, proper medical attention, love and affection in their last days. Sevalaya has also performed the last rites, for those who passed away and the relatives refused to take care.
We estimate atleast Rs 500 as the expense for one person and the total Deepavali expenses will come to Rs 4,55,000, to support all the 910 persons. We are sure, as every year, we will get your support.
Please do visit Sevalaya campus and join all our children and grand pas and grand mas for a grand Deepavali celebration.
Cheques in favour of ‘Sevalaya’ , or donations in kind like cloths, crackers, sweets etc., can be sent to
Sevalaya,
Kasuva Village, Pakkam Post,
Thiruninravur – 602024.
